The Turntide Sierra Echo-R made history as the first purpose-built electric vehicle to qualify for and compete in the grueling King of the Hammers Desert Challenge, one of the toughest off-road races in the world.
Powered by Turntide’s breakthrough Axial Flux Electric Drive Unit (EDU) platform and featuring a powertrain supplied by Hypercraft—the Sierra Echo-R was built to push drivetrain performance to the limit.
Subjected to relentless vibration, sustained heavy loads, intense desert heat, and choking dust, the race delivered the ultimate real-world proving ground, validating the durability and performance of a Hypercraft powertrain in the harshest possible conditions.

Beyond the finish line, the Desert Challenge represents more than a race—it’s a validation environment few platforms ever experience. In terrain that relentlessly stresses every mechanical and electrical system, the Sierra Echo-R demonstrated that advanced electric propulsion can deliver not only performance, but resilience. The collaboration between Turntide’s axial flux motor technology and Hypercraft’s powertrain engineering underscores what’s possible when cutting-edge electrification is pushed into the harshest real-world conditions—and comes back proven.
